What is cognitive bias?

How does cognitive bias affect decision making?

How can we recognize cognitive bias?

How can we avoid cognitive bias?

This is how your brain works.

Our brains are always making decisions. Should I hire this person? Is the product ready for release? Is my project on track or has it gone off the rails? If we took the time to fully think through everything we would be paralyzed with inaction. That is why our brains developed shortcuts, called cognitive biases, to help us make decisions quickly. We look for patterns, things that seem familiar, or things that seem similar to what we've seen before. And then we make the decision quickly based on that.
But making a quick decision is not necessarily the same as making a good decision, especially when the stakes are high and the circumstances are unfamiliar. These are the times when we need to step back, pay careful attention, and make a thoughtful decision based on a wide range of information. At these times, letting unconscious biases or cognitive biases influence our decisions can lead to costly mistakes.
Bias Breakers increase awareness of bias in decision making. They make it easy to understand biases, how they affect decision making, and what can be done to minimize their impact. Bias Breakers can help you recognize unconscious bias and cognitive bias and take positive actions to improve decision making.
It's not possible to completely eliminate bias in our decision making. That's just how our brains work. But, knowing this, we can take steps to lessen the impact of biases and make better decisions with Bias Breakers.
